At Plymouth Active, we are incredibly proud to once again welcome the Strength of Spirit Games to Tinside Lido.
As one of Plymouth's most iconic landmarks, Tinside has long been a place where people come together through the power of water, whether that's to improve their health and wellbeing, challenge themselves physically or simply connect with others. Hosting the swimming element of the Strength of Spirit Games reflects everything that Tinside stands for: resilience, determination and community.
The games provide an important platform for serving personnel in recovery and medically discharged veterans to take part in adaptive sport and rehabilitation through competition. Taking place against the backdrop of Plymouth Sound, Tinside offers a unique setting for participants to begin their triathlon journey and showcase the determination, resilience and teamwork that define the games.
As an organisation, Plymouth Active is proud to support the Armed Forces community beyond the Games themselves. We are signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, recognising our responsibility to ensure that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and their families are treated fairly and are not disadvantaged in accessing our services.
Through this commitment, we offer concessionary access to our facilities and activities for members of the Armed Forces community, helping to make health and wellbeing opportunities more accessible. We also actively support initiatives that encourage active lifestyles and strengthen connections with military families across the city.
One such initiative is Swim Free, delivered at Plymouth Life Centre in partnership with Greenwich Hospital and the Andrew Simpson Foundation. The programme provides free swimming lessons for children and young people from serving Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary families, helping them to develop an essential life skill, build confidence in the water and enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits that swimming can provide. As a city with strong military roots, Plymouth has a long-standing relationship with the Armed Forces. We are proud that Plymouth Active can play a small part in honouring that connection by providing spaces that support physical activity, wellbeing and community participation.
We look forward to welcoming competitors, families and supporters to Tinside Lido and wish everyone taking part in the Strength of Spirit Games every success. It is an honour to host an event that so perfectly embodies the values of perseverance, teamwork and strength of spirit.
