The Armed Forces Flag was raised from the Plymouth Guildhall flagpole this morning, where it will be flown all week, to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.
The ceremony was attended Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Sam Davey, the Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, Brigadier Simon Young CBE DL, the Naval Base Commander, Commodore Ian Shipperley CBE ADC RN together with the High Sheriff of Devon, Mrs Grania Phillips.
Plymouth City Council Chief Executive Tracey Lee, Leader of the Council, Councillor Tudor Evans and shadow Leader, Councillor Ian Bowyer also attended, along with many Commanding Officers from across the city.
The flag raising ceremony was followed by a reception where the Lord Mayor and the Naval Base Commander presented this year’s Armed Forces Day badge to veterans. Seven-year-old Evan Craig, who won the competition to design the badge, and the runners-up were presented with badges and their prizes.
Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Sam Davey, said: “Plymouth is a city with such strong links to the military and we are extremely proud of the Armed Forces based here, in our city. This year is a very special year for the RAF, as they celebrate their Centenary with commemorative and inspirational events and activities.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to show my support during both Armed Forces day and week. There really is something for everyone to enjoy and experience, as well as being a great opportunity to say thank you to the Armed Forces.”
Representatives from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force will be at the piazza in Plymouth city centre on Wednesday 27 June and Thursday 28 June from 9am to 6pm, raising awareness of the many regular and reserve career opportunities and apprenticeships the armed forces have to offer.
Visitors can see an array of exciting military vehicles, equipment and exhibitions, including vintage 1940’s military vehicles and quad bike, take on the Army climbing wall and test their speed and agility in group or individual tasks.
The week culminates in Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June on Plymouth Hoe, which features a packed programme of exciting events and activities.
The day includes military parades, live music, vehicle and weapon displays, static helicopters and fire engines. There will also be an exciting arena programme, thrilling two-hour air display and a free outdoor evening concert.
