Fly the Flag Campaign for Devonport
Plymouth is campaigning against potential defence cuts which could see the loss of Devonport-based HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark.
The campaign calls for a re-think on possible proposals to decommission the amphibious assault ships which are essential to the UK’s defence as they enable the Royal Marines to deploy quickly using landing craft and helicopters, as well as provide humanitarian aid.
A study commissioned by Plymouth City Council has also highlighted that the loss of the ships would have an impact on the 1,045 jobs and £56m in Gross Value Added (GVA) the ships support in Plymouth through the supply chain and employee wages.
The loss of the ships would have a greater impact across Devon and Cornwall, impacting on the 1,176 jobs and £61 million in GVA the ships provide to the two counties due to a large proportion of the supply chain lying outside the city’s boundaries.
The ships support a total of 250 suppliers across the South West.
You can help protect the ships and Royal Marines by signing an online petition and emailing the Prime Minister to give your views.
